Guidelines For Using Partition Software For Beginners While Trying To Extend Windows Drive
Sunday, September 5th, 2010As is understood, partition assistant finds use in managing the hard disk of our computer. We know it helps us to create, increase and resize partition. But the operate to be followed to do so shall be discussed here.
It must be primarily realize that for a resize or shrink volume to be possible, it is necessary to have a Virtual Hard Disk (VHD). This is a file format, and it contains everything, files, that you save in your physical hard disk. It is with help of it that you can also have several OS like Windows 7, Windows XP, Linux etc on a single computer. It gives the host machine an option to boot from multiple systems.
Having a virtual disk(VHD) is especially a critical advantage to Windows Administrator as they can achieve specific configurations that are pre built within a host machine.
Also many people can exercise one PC, booting in from different operating systems, without any interference into each others’ work. It also bring to better back-up as virus infection can be undone.
Currently, only Windows 7 Enterprise Edition and Server 2008 can allow physical computer to mount and create VHD file from its disk management snap-in. Once you have a VHD, then you can turn into using your Partition Assistant to adjust or expand partition.
Also at the very outset, one must be able to distinguish Partition Assistant from the built-in disk manager that you have in Windows. This disk management snap-in does not offer resize, reduce or extend partition features. Hence, there is need of third party utility, like Partition Assistant.
It is the very user amicable software and once you start it, it will give you directions to the next step.
You need to keep in mind that the total data storage space of a computer’s hard drive is divided into maximum four, and minimum one, primary partitions.
The primary partitions have a 16-byte entry code which forms Partition Table situated in the master boot record.
Out of the four, only one can be an expand drive provider. An extend partition is nothing but a primary partition which has secondary partition(s). A hard disk cannot have more than one extend drive; though it can be subdivided into logical partitions.
This is all that you need to know before you download your own Partition Assistant or other Partition Manager. Just keep in mind these small things, and get, set go!
