What is a Rearview Mirror Hidden Camera and How Does it Work?

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

A rearview mirror hidden camera is simply just that, a camera that is somewhat hidden on your rearview mirror to allow continuous recording of activity in front of, or inside a vehicle. These mirror cameras requires minimal installation and is usually achieved by clipping it onto your existing rear view mirror.

Most of the rearview mirror hidden cameras on the market today have a 1/4 inch digital CMOS color camera built in, and a slot that accepts SD Memory cards up to 16GB. These rear view mirrors also double as an audio – video recorder and a DVR (digital video recorder). These cameras are also normally equipped with a built-in color camera that can rotate 330 degrees to view a desired internal or external area.

Many models of rearview mirror hidden cameras include a wireless external camera that can be set up on the rear dash or attach to the outside of the car. LCD display monitors, usually 3.6 inch TFT, are typically located directly on the mirror to allow instant playback of video and watch it in real-time 30 FPS. These rearview mirror cameras are usually equipped with buttons so the user can conveniently choose operation of the internal or the external camera.

Rearview mirror cameras generally have multiple types of power sources. Most have a built in rechargeable battery or it can be powered by a vehicles auxiliary power supply or cigarette lighter. Models equipped with the rechargeable battery can also be recharged by plugging the unit into your computer using a standard USB cord.

Rearview mirror cameras are an affordable, easy to install and very effective form of surveillance for a variety of applications. A rearview mirror camera can monitor and record activity both stationary and while moving to convert an entire motor vehicle into a covert surveillance system.
