I live in california and attend a public school. There are security cameras on campus that are very visable. Lately there has been a rash of thieving. I know the person that stole, and i dont want them to get caught; however i heared that there was a “hidden camera” the room, where property was taken. Is it illegal to have a hidden camera in a public school, and if so what if its called “evidence”? can it be dissmissed, or will it uphold in court?
since it is illegal, what can i do about it? can i demand to see the camera?
but none of my rights were broken when they installed the hidden camera without notifying me? even if im a minor?

No it is not….There can be cameras anywhere EXCEPT the bathroom and or locker.
These camaras are for public safety, and when one enters a school they sign a contract that gives them the right to video tape a student….
Remember that incident in the school bus where the driver hit the kid? If a bus can have a camara, so can the school, and I am a criminal justice student, so I tell you, if the evidence was legally obtained, then it can be used..

there can be cameras anywhere on public or private property other than in the obvious areas where it would be an invasion of privacy. i.e. showers, locker rooms, bathrooms etc.
There is no expectation to privacy in areas that are open to general public or public/governmental institutions

The cameras are perfectly legal unless they are in bathrooms or locker rooms. You should also turn in the theif. Stealing is wrong in that it violates the rights of another person. It is not like smoking pot.

Your friend is a thief, and you don’t want them to get caught? Here’s hoping your friend gets nailed with his or her hand in the cookie jar, by a camera and your with this person, and you get busted as an accessory.

It is NOT illegal. And, if you know who committed the theft you are obligated to report it. If not, you are as guilty as the thief.

Why wouldn’t you want the person to get caught, what if they take your stuff. If they learn the consequences now later in life they may not take things that don’t belong to them. No schools can have security cameras wherever they want, even in the restrooms as long as they are not over the stalls.

I do know that it is illegal to have a hidden camera any where someone feels they should have privacy ie.dressing rooms, bathrooms, etc. I’m not sure about the rest. I know a place you can get a hidden camera detector. It’s not too expensive. Check it out below.
